After Zeus fights and sends the Titans to the underworld, he becomes the ruler of Mount Olympus, home of all greek gods. Hades is sent to rule the underworld, but he makes plans to throw Zeus out of Mount Olympus with the Titans' help. The three Fates warn him that his plans would be endangered if Hercules, Zeus newborn child, is still around by the time he tries to take over Mount Olympus. Hades sends Pain and Panic to turn Hercules into a mortal and kill him, but they fail in their attempt and leave him on earth with his divine strength to be raised as a human. Hercules grows up but later learns he is the son of gods, and in order to return to Mt. Olympus he must turn into a "true hero". He is trained by Phil the satyr and becomes the most famous hero in ancient Greece after battling monsters of all kinds. He even saves Mt. Olympus from Hade's take-over, but he only becomes a god again after he offers to exchange his life in order to save Meg, his love, from Hades' underworld and shows that a true hero must have a strong heart and not only physical strength.

I love the animation in this movie! The character design is great and James Woods puts in a great performance as Hades. The story plays fast and loose with greek myth but has many comedy elements that were missing from most disney movies of the 90s. (4.11.06) (23.10.08) (25.8.09)

Disney have always had their phases, its hard to tell when they hit the stage where their cartoons hit the stage where they started making cheap gags about pop culture, but argueably it started here for Disney. And strangely what has been their downfall strangely quite works here, its in a stage where the modern day lingo from characters actually comedically works and I really enjoyed Hercules a lot! I normally hate any cartoon nowadays not made by Pixar because of how modern it feels, how un-charming it really is, but I loved Hercules for it, while it leaves no lasting impression on me I have a feeling that if I were to sit down and watch it again I would still have just as much four star fun as I had the first time around

Definetly one of the better Disney films of the past twenty years or so. The songs are a little over the top but the characters are emotive, wonderfully animated, with a style that captures the eye and calls attention to its little swirls and decorative lines, hint at Greek vases as thier source. The dialogue is jovial and the film is not afraid to poke fun at itself (ie characters wearing Hercules merchandise.) The songs are catchy and sweeping, if made a little hammy by thier performances. There were relatively few songs in Hercules, it feels, or that perhaps the songs were not as effective or important at capturing and expositing narrative as in other films. Captivating art and an Ancient Greek setting go so well together and make the world come alive. Its a swell animated film that will capture the imagination of any kid who watches it, and notables like James Woods and Rip Torn make the dialogue swift enough for adults to have fun, too. Good movie, typical Disney faire but closer to the top of the pile. 3.5/5 stars

Hercules is a fun tale. It's not among the best of the Disney movies, but it's cool for an occasional viewing. Who doesn't love Greek myth? Disney took a lot of liberties with the story, so don't expect this to be true to source. That didn't bother me much, but the overall song quality did. There was only one good song in this movie, and for a Disney movie, that's absolutely awful. It's a little sad that the creators didn't make Hercules as good as it could have potentially been, but kids should still love it, regardless.

Really well made peice of animation. The songs are pretty awesome in this film but I guess i'm just a fag for all the Menken stuff, the stuff sang me the muse's is really well written, funny and moving at the same time. But I guess you expect this all as standard in the Disney reniassance stuff. There's loads of really funny pop-culture stuff in this and when anything features Karate Kid jokes i'm totally on board! The action sections are well done and move at a pace to keep you on the edge of your seat and the timings and pace by both Danny DeVito and James Wood's in their delivery of lines makes their characters hillarious in two different ways. Cool underdog story and like most Disney flicks a must watch, anyone can enjoy this film.
